Monster’s Ball is one long sequence of Tower moments, and Leticia bears the horrific brunt of them. Come the end of the film, the landscape of Leticia’s life has changed beyond recognition. It is a devastating film and a devastating performance, and it’s a crying shame to think that Berry’s dramatic talents have not been recognised since.

Halle Berry’s win was a cultural Tower moment in itself as she became - and to date is still - the only African-American actress to win for Best Actress. Here’s hoping that Audra Day or Viola Davis will scoop the prize this year for their much-lauded performances.
